for University of Utah, Topics in Geography, Spring Quarter 1997
GEOG393-593 GPS – GIS
Disabilities and special needs: Students with disabilities are most welcome in the class. Because the course involves out-of-doors as well as indoors activities, please let me know as soon as possible if you have special needs (genevieve.atwood@geog.utah.edu) that I should know about. Students with physical, mental or learning disabilities must let me know about requiring special assistance by the end of the second week of classes. Students with physical, mental or learning disabilities must also register and document the disability with the Office of Disabled Students.
Attendance: "Topics in Geography" classes expect student participation … field trips, seminars, etc. Geog393-593 GPS - GIS is no exception even though the class is large. Your attendance is expected. If you have an emergency or other reason why you must miss a class, let me know. I probably can't repeat the class demos. I'll assign a module from one of the courses on the world wide web for you to do as a make-up.
Equipment: The goal of this course is for you to become proficient at using two powerful geographic tools, GPS and GIS, separately and together. The equipment is expensive. The software is copyright protected. For class demos we'll have a variety of GPS equipment and examples of software. For your projects we have one copy of Trimble's Office software so you'll want to sign up for the hardware "key" that permits the use of the software on a PC. We have two Trimble GeoExplorer dataloggers. There are sign-up sheets for them. Use the equipment and software. Become experts. And take good care of the equipment and respect the copyrights. See Data logging procedures.
Visitors: The class is oversubscribed, but some visitors are very welcome… those with GPS units to share. For the class demos 4/9/97 and 4/16/97, please bring whatever GPS unit you may have (and if you have access to someone else's GPS, bring it and them to demonstrate it). For the 4/23/97 class, if you have access to a Trimble GeoExplorer, please bring it.
Office hours are for you: Tammy Wambeam is a wonderful coach for GIS and good at GPS. Genevieve Atwood (me) is good at GIS and the department coach for GPS. We want to help you, so use the office hours. One of us will be around the DIGIT lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See syllabus. When you want special coaching, make special arrangements.
Late assignments will be accepted with penalties (10% / assignment / day)… unless you have made arrangements with me (Genevieve Atwood) or have a written excuse from a doctor, lawyer, police officer, etc.
Working together: Work together as much as you like getting expert at the equipment, the software, the concepts of GPS and GIS. For the assignments marked with an (I) for individuals, it's Okay to work together but what you hand in must be your work (not co-authored; attribute other's contributions).
Grades: see syllabus.
No extra credit.
