Application Instructions

(Accordance of student's interests with those of prospective faculty advisers is a condition for acceptance into the program. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with department faculty during the application process. )

APPLICATION DEADLINES
PROGRAM FALL SPRING
Master’s (Applying for financial aid) January 20th Admitted Fall only
Master’s (No financial aid requested) January 20th Admitted Fall only
Ph.D. (Applying for financial aid) January 20th January 20th (previous year)
Ph.D. (No financial aid requested) April 1st November 1st

NOTES : Master's students are only accepted for Fall Semester. The departmental application AND financial aid deadline for the Master's program is January 20th for the following academic year. Ph.D. applications are accepted for Fall semester (due by April 1) and Spring semester (due by November 1). However, for Ph.D. applicants the financial aid deadline is January 20th for the following academic year.

In order to complete your application for the graduate program in geography, the following materials must be submitted:
 
MASTER'S APPLICANTS (M.S. and M.A.*)
*Note: Candidates for the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree must be certified by the Department of Languages and Literature as having demonstrated "standard proficiency" in at least one foreign language. The department must approve the choice of language. (There is no language requirement for the Master of Science (M.S.) degree).

ATTACH A PERSONAL STATEMENT: Please write a statement on a separate sheet which includes concise and clear statements on the following topics: (1) what your professional goals are following graduation and why you feel that a Master's will help you attain those goals; (2) what specialty areas you will probably be preparing yourself for (please note specialties listed in department description); (3) why you think that the University of Utah can offer you what you need in a Master's program.
2. Teaching Participation Form
3. Three (3) letters of recommendation from persons who are familiar with your academic abilities      (Form to be attached to each letter )
4. Official scores from the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

3. Official Transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
4. TOEFL scores above 500 (173 on computer-based exam or 61 on new iBT exam) or 5.0 on the IELTS and must not be over 2 years old (International Students only)
Use institution code 4853 and department code 70
5. Financial Statement (International Students only).  Proof of financial responsibility is NOT needed to evaluate an applicant's file, nor is it needed to accept a student.  (This information IS needed prior to issuing the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility so students may obtain the student visa.)

Note: A Master's degree is required prior to entering the Ph.D. program.

Interviews

The department has a small amount of funding for domestic graduate applicants who are interested in visiting the University of Utah before making their decision.  Please inquire with the Director of Graduate Studies.
